Storeroom Conversion Project

Work is underway at Nevada Lodge #4!

We started our new project to morning of Saturday, January 21st. A little snow on the ground, but not too bad; all of the work is in the store room. We are tearing out the old floor in preparation to build out the storage area into an additional dining area.

This image was shot in September when we had a work party to clear our store room in preparation to develop an additional dining area.

We got an early start at 10:30 am. We had four of our Temple Board members working on the construction or should I say, the demolition crew. John Crow, Craig Vote, Weston Nagel and myself, Jim Weekes.

Here are some images of John, Craig and Weston removing the floor planking. It turned out to be quite a day. After removing about half of the flooring, we determined that we would make a move to support and reinforce the existing joists before we lay down the new sub-flooring. That will create a floor that will outlast the original…

You can imagine the amount of dust and history that we brought to life after we started our work. The joists are massive and will be used to support the new floor. The tongue and groove planks were dry and in great shape, with the exception of the wear and tear that the planks showed after all those years of use from 1879.

Here is a close view of the existing floor. As a soft pine wood, the many knots from the branches that were cut during milling survived the wear on the floor better than the softer portions of the planks. That resulted in a hump or protrusion everywhere there was a knot. The wood under John’s feet will show you how thick the planks were and how they were joined together with the tongue and groove technique, then nailed to the multiple joists.
